We chatted to photographer Henry Knock

After being introduced to the idea behind Instagram, Henry began focus his attentions on his, then hobby, photography, slowly realising through his steady success with his page that it was his portrait shots that really inspired him. It was this realisation that changed things, and Henry’s Instagram was soon flooded with likes and follows, boosting him to 36,000 followers.
His atmospheric images always veer away from the predictable, and he’s one of the few photographers who’d choose an interesting shot over a perfectly neat one. Able to capture the distinct personality of the person in front of the camera, Henry makes a story with each of his photos, and it’s no wonder that so many brands, such as Adidas and Starbucks want him to work his magic on their ads.

Can you tell us a little bit about what you do and when you got into it?
I’m a freelance photographer working mainly for different brands, specialising in fashion, sport and lifestyle. I’d always had an interest in photography, but I never really did anything creative with it. It was the advent of Instagram which changed everything. When I first downloaded the app (back in 2011) I didn’t fully understand it and posted mostly images of my dinner, my sisters cat or friends on nights out.
It was only once someone explained to me there was a community behind it and that “it’s like twitter, but with pictures” that I began to follow people who inspired me. It changed the way I looked at photography and I found myself regularly walking the streets of London taking photos of things that interested me – For a good while that was architecture, before realising it was people that I most enjoyed pointing my camera at.
Having previously spent the best part of a decade working in TV and film I made the decision to jack it all in at the start of last year and follow my dream. Turns out it was the best decision I’ve ever made and for the first time in my life I feel truly passionate about what I’m doing.
How’s 2015 been for you? Any major highlights?
2015 was hands down the best year of my life. I could go on for ages about my favourite parts but you’d probably stop reading! MAJOR highlights however were; working regularly with Adidas, my collaboration with Lee Jeans UK – which culminated in my first exhibition, held in the middle of old street roundabout with over 800 people in attendance. Working as a photographer at Glastonbury for the legendary Block9 crew. Doing a shoot for Kutula in Los Angeles was awesome, as was catching a sunset ride in a helicopter over the Hollywood Hills and Down Town LA.
What song have you got on repeat at the moment?
My flat mate recently introduced me to FleetMac Wood (a DJ collective and party dedicated to re-edits and originals of Fleetwood Mac) and I’ve been caining the various mixes and tracks on their Soundcloud page every day for over a week now.
What fashion advice do you have for a man?
Keep it simple. You can’t go wrong in a white tshirt, some nice raw denim and a pair of black and white chucks.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
To take art more seriously and to not get caught up in what’s happening around you.
1 tip to grow your Instagram account
I get asked this quite a bit and my answer’s always the same: Post what you “like” and not what you think will get “likes”, if your content is good and you’re genuinely interested in what you’re posting the passion will shine through.
What’s the one thing you never want to see a guy wearing?
One of those half thong things that just about covers your cock and balls, I remember one of those TOWIE idiots making the papers wearing one a while back, I never need to see that again.
Any major plans for 2016?
Get fit. Continue improving my work, think of more conceptual stuff and generally give my images more of a narrative and cinematic feel. Travel wise Japan is very high up on the list as is Iceland and while I go to the States quite a lot, I’m still yet to do a big road trip so I’d love to make that happen this year also.
What is your one guilty pleasure?
HARIBO. Just saying the words makes me want some! Currently trying to wean myself off them but I have a real sweet tooth so it’s difficult, I found giving up smoking much easier.
Who’s the most stylish man on the planet for you right now?
Oh god thats hard! I don’t know if I’d say he’s the most stylish man on the planet, but I’ve never seen ASAP Rocky not look fresh. And I know it’s an obvious one, but it’s amazing the transformation Beckham has made over the last 15 years or so.
