How to Bleach Your Hair

When it comes to hair colouring for men, one of the most popularly sought after looks is either blonde or bleached hair. Bleaching your hair can be a tricky process, with the constantly looming chance to break or badly damage your hair, not to mention the risk of dreaded orange or yellow stripes. If you’re willing to risk it, follow the steps below to get the bleached look.

  1. Prepare all the necessary products including; 30% volume developer, powdered bleach, application brush, purple shampoo, gloves and mixing bowl.
  2. Mix the developer and bleach as recommended and stir thoroughly until smooth.
  3. Use a towel / old t-shirt to protect your clothing before applying – bleach spills will ruin just about everything.
  4. Apply throughout hair, starting from tips down to the root – ensuring not to miss any sections.
  5. Develop for around 30/40 mins constantly checking for breakage, etc.
  6. Depending on original hair colour, you’re expecting a lift of about 2-3 levels, so multiple bleachings may be required.
  7. Wash out with purple shampoo, ensuring all bleach is out of hair.
  8. Mix toner with your developer and apply to reach desired shade (covered below).

Tips for Bleaching Your Hair

  • Before you bleach your hair, treat it to some TLC a few weeks before hand. This means deep conditions, using hair masks or natural alternatives like coconut oil.
  • If you need to bleach your hair a couple of times to get it right, always leave a few weeks in between each bleaching process. You’ll likely have to deal with orange, rust coloured hair for a few weeks, but it’s better than all of it falling out.
  • It’s unlikely that your hair will be a perfect soft white after your bleach it, which is where toner comes in. Slather your hair in the stuff and leave it for 20-30 minutes to let it do its thing before rinsing it out.
  • Afterwards, continue to treat your hair nicely, as it will be weakened from the harsh process and will need time to recover. Deep conditioners and hair oils are good to help restore the natural shine and strength of your hair.

How to Dye Your Hair Blonde

There are so many shades of blonde, from the striking white platinum to the more natural, dusky tones, so there’s really a shade to suit everyone. You’ll have to start by bleaching as laid out above, then follow with an appropriate toner for your skin tone.

  • Pale Skin: In general the paler your skin, the better able you are to get away with really light, bold shades of blonde, such as platinum or gold, but you can also pull off medium tone looks such as a warm ‘bronde’ or sand depending on the warm tones of your skin.
  • Medium Skin: With so many skin colours out there, it’s hard to define ‘medium skin’, but if you’re dealing with a tone that isn’t very light, that you wouldn’t describe as dark, then you can fit into his broad category. For this skin tone, you can go for warmer blondes, such as honey or gold, for a natural look, or try out a platinum for a more striking contrast between your skin tone and your hair.
  • Dark Skin: If you have darker skin and want to rock the blonde look you can easily go for whatever shade you want, but it’s best to balance it out with some darker roots and a gradual fade into the blonde. This stops there from being too strong a contrast, and give a more subtle appearance.

How to Dye Your Hair Grey

Similarly to any other blonde do, you’ll need to start by bleaching before you look at getting the grey involved. There are a few box kits that focus on achieving a grey or silver hair tone, but we’d advise you to pick up some quality toner and mix with your developer again.

Everyone’s going to go grey eventually, so this is a look that suits anyone, regardless of skin tone, however if you want to ensure you’re getting a modern look, rather than an aged one, make sure you go for more of a block colour rather than one with more natural shades in it, and keep it bright with a good toner or purple shampoo.

Should a Man Dye His Grey Hair?

Should men dye their hair when going grey? There’s no reason that a man shouldn’t dye his grey hair to a more ‘youthful’ shade, and in a lot of cases, the change can look both stylish and natural. There are just a few basic tips to keep in mind before you try it out.

  • Don’t go for a block colour. There’s nothing more unnatural than a man walking around with hair that looks like it’s been spray-painted. Make sure to add in some differing shades to create a more natural look.
  • If you’re dyeing your hair at home, don’t use temporary dye. Temporary dye isn’t going to be strong enough to cover grey, as the overall texture of the hair is different, and require a heartier dose of dye. You can try out dyes like Redken Colour Camo, which easily blends out your greys to create a natural finish.
  • Keep your budget in mind. If you dye your hair you need to keep touch ups in mind, so unless you don’t mind redying your roots every month or so, try going for a style where some regrowth works with the look.

How to Dye Your Hair

The trick to achieving most colours is in the initial bleaching. You’ll need to give your hair an overall bleach before you can then reintroduce a colour of your choosing. Remember, if you’re going for something quite different to your natural colour it’ll require a lot of maintenance – so be sure to have the budget/tools at your disposal.

On That Note

It can be daunting to change up your hair colour, and with the numbers of trends coming and going, it’s hard to know what look to go for. However, if you’re not swayed by what’s popular, and instead go for a colour that you like and that you know will suit you, then there’s really no risk when it comes to dyeing your hair.

Temporary dyes are there for a reason, and if you’re not ready to commit to a colour then experiment until you find one that perfect shade for you. There are no real rules either, so get out there and keep trying until you find your ideal look.
