2017 was hands down a good year, but 2018 is going to be a lot better. There’s so much going on in the capital that you will be spoilt for choice, but luckily we’ve narrowed it down to a list of some of the things that we are looking forward to most.
2017 was a big year for film (not just with that massive Oscars blunder), music and TV, but 2018 is set to be even bigger and a whole better. With the releases of long-waited films like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Avengers: Infinity War, the year is looking big for the box office. Elsewhere, the releases (we hope) of albums from the likes of the Arctic Monkeys and Nicki Minaj are ensuring that the music industry will be as lively as ever. With regards to sport, it’s set to be a huge year with the Winter Olympics soon kicking off, and June seeing the arrival of the 2018 World cup over in Russia.
Here we round up the things we are looking most forward to in order to make it that bit easier for you when you start to think of what you want to see and do this year. In our opinion, these are the top things to do in 2018.
- 1 The 2018 Winter Olympics
- 2 The 2018 World Cup
- 3 Hamilton
- 4 Black Panther
- 5 Avengers: Infinity War
- 6 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The 2018 Winter Olympics
The 2018 Winter Olympics is undoubtedly the first biggest sporting event of the year and will be kicking off in February. Hosted in Pyeongchang County in South Korea, the Olympics will run from 9th to 25th February. The event will stand as South Korea‘s second olympic games to date (Seoul hosted the Summer Olympics in 1988), but this will be the first time that the the Winter Olympics will be held in the country.
Tickets for the Olympics went on sale in 2016 and range from $17 to $776. So far ticket sales have been slow, no doubt because of the location of the games, but it will still be a spectacle as usual. Just as with London in 2012, South Korea has initiated the building of a full Winter Olympics village, which is now complete. The Winter Olympics will be televised as per usual and will undoubtedly be one of the biggest world events of 2018.
The Olympics will feature 102 events in 15 sports, from alpine skiing and bobsleigh to ice hockey and figure skating. Thus far, the participating countries are still up in the air, but it has been confirmed that Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, and Singapore are scheduled to make their Winter Olympics debut if they decide to participate.
The 2018 World Cup
This is undoubtedly the biggest sporting event of the year, with the world cup reaching millions of people globally. The 2018 World Cup stands as the 21st World Cup to take place and is scheduled to take place in Russia from the 14th June to the 15th July 2018, after the country won the rights back in 2010. This will be the first football world cup held in Europe since 2006, so it’s quite a big deal over here.
There are 32 teams competing, including defending champions Germany (Panama and Iceland will be playing for the first time) and a total of 64 matches will be played across the month. Russia will be hosting the games across 12 venues, with the final taking place at the Luzhniki Stadium.
Russia will be the first team to play, facing Saudi Arabia when the world’s biggest football event kicks of on the 14th June.
Back in December, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton arrived in London and it has been met with critical acclaim, which was no surprise, as it has already taken the US by storm. Taking centre stage at the Victoria Palace Theatre, the play explores the American Revolutionary War, and despite the fact that the Brits are made out to be pretty awful in it, the play is exhilarating and pretty much phenomenal.
The best thing about the play is the way in which it focuses on one of history’s biggest events, but does so by splicing the drama with a soundtrack heavily inclusive of Hip Hop and RnB. The play mashes a whole host of political speeches with references to Shakespeare, Gilbert and Sullivan, 1960s pop and Biggie Smalls, in a way that is completely unique and has Lin-Manuel Miranda praised for her epic work.
You can book tickets to see Hamilton until August 2018, so definitely make this one of your must-sees of the year.
It’s safe to say that Black Panther is one of the most hotly-anticipated films of the year. It is an American superhero movie, which is based on the Marvel comics of the same name, and will be distributed by Disney and Marvel together (so you can guarantee it’s going to be good).
The cast is endless and will see the likes of Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis team up for what is inevitably going to be one of the biggest movies of the year. Chadwick Boseman takes centre stage as T’Challa AKA Black Panther in a plot that sees him return home as king of Wakanda, where he finds his sovereignty challenged.
Black Panther is set to be released on the 16th February 2018 and will be in the first of many major movies this coming year, most likely defining and paving the way for other films.
Avengers: Infinity War
Avengers: Infinity War is the other massive Marvel movie that is set to take 2018 by storm. Contuining on from the success of 2012’s The Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron, the latest film will be released in May.
The film will see the Avengers team up with the Guardian’s of the Galaxy, another set of Marvel superheroes, as they attempt to save the world (obviously). Robert Downey Jr will reprise his role as Tony Stark AKA Iron Man, while Josh Brolin will play the bad guy Thanos. The rest of the cast will include Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, Jeremy Renner, Benedict Cumberbatch, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper and Scarlet Johannson, to name just a few of the stellar cast.
We can guarantee that this is going to be one of the films of the year, and with a cast like that, it’s not hard to see why.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is set to be the fifth instalment in the Jurassic Park series and will see Steven Spielberg back in his role as an executive producer, while Derek Connolly and Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow return as writers. The film will also see the triumphant return of Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and B. D. Wong who will be joined by the likes of Geraldine Chaplin, Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall. The big name though is Jeff Goldblum, who will reprise his role as Dr Ian Malcolm from the original two Jurassic Park movies.
The film is set to be released in June and sees the events after Jurassic World. In this the theme park was destroyed and now Claire Wearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) has founded a park protection group, although soon enough her and Chris Pratt discover a conspiracy that is a threat to both dinosaurs and humanity.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is set to be released in June 2018.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald
This film continues on from 2015’s Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and will be the tenth instalment building on the wizarding world of JK Rowling. Directed by David Yates, and with a script written by JK Rowling herself, the film is sure to be a hit and will inevitably be the film of Christmas when it hits cinemas in November.
The film has, as expected, an incredible cast that includes Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, and Claudia Kim. The plot will continue where the first film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise left off, with the dark wizard Grindelwald presenting his true form. This film will see the introduction of Albus Dumbledore who, along with Newt Scamander, will try to take down Grindelwald.
Major Lazer – Music Is The Weapon
2018 is set to be a big year for Major Lazer, who are about to release their fourth studio album. Music Is The Weapon will be released later this year and will feature tracks like ‘Cold Water’ which featured Justin Bieber. So far collaborations with the likes of The Weeknd, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Sia and Camila Cabelo, while songs with Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott and Quavo have also been released.
Arctic Monkeys – N/A
Arctic Monkey‘s sixth album is slated for release this year, after a hiatus since 2014. Speaking last year to motorcycle magazine, The Ride, bassist Nick O’Malley said that the album should be out next year and that “if it isn’t, we’ve got problems”. While we haven’t had much more news since, we are hopeful that this is the year they finally give us something.
Nicki Minaj- N/A
Nothing has been confirmed yet in terms of this work in progress, but Minaj has said that is set to be her best work yet. It has been nearly three years since we have had anything solid from Minaj and it’s about time she puts something out. In a recent interview with DJ Whoo Kid, she explained that she wants to deliver “a classic hip hop album.”
Cardi B – N/A
While no name has yet been announced about Cardi B’s debut album, it is definitely in the works and is set to be one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Cardi B really has made her mark on the music industry this year and has completely defied what anyone first thought of her. We wait in anticipation to see what her debut record will be like.
The Royal Wedding
It had been rumoured for quite some time that Prince Harry was set to make Meghan Markle his bride, but finally at the end of 2017, the pair announced that they would in fact be getting married in 2018. They have set the date of the wedding for May and we can assume that it will be just as big a day as we saw with Prince William and Kate Middleton a couple of years ago. While most things have been kept under wraps, we’re sure a few details will be leaked in the net few months, especially with the wedding falling in the first half of the year. This is bound to be one of the biggest events in 2018 in the UK.
The Royal Baby
Following on from the wedding, it seems apt to say that there will be another royal baby this year. Prince William and the Duchess Of Cambridge will be adding to their brood in 2018, with the due date having been confirmed for April, just a matter of weeks before Prince Harry weds Meghan Markle.
On That Note
It’s safe to say that 2018 is so far looking to be a big year, especially for popular culture. The music and film industries will be extremely busy, with the release of music from the likes of Nicki Minaj, Arctic Monkeys and Cardi B expected, alongside film releases such as Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Elsewhere we can expect the arrival of a royal baby, as well as the long awaited wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Then if that wasn’t enough, it’s set to be a big year for sports, with the 21st FIFA World Cup taking place and the Winter Olympics kicking off next month.
