White trainers seem to be the go to staple footwear for the summer, but sticking with just these can limit your style options. Boat shoes have the comfort of trainers, the style of brogues and the versatility of plimsols, so they’re a great option for the summer months.
Despite the fact that they’ve got a little more detail to them, they’re not automatically going to the steal the show when it comes to your outfit. There are various ways to wear this easy summer shoe to fit any style.
It’s easy to go for a preppy look with these shoes – just throw on a pair of tailored shorts, an oxford shirt and then slip on a neutral coloured pair of boat shoes. It’s a classic, simple look that will take no time to put together in the morning.
If the preppy look isn’t for you then there’s still ways to keep things casual without buttoning up an oxford shirt. Try a pair of slim fit jeans instead, and match it with a fitted T-shirt in a neutral colour. Try to avoid bold, modern prints on your T-shirt thought, as this can clash a little with the classic look of the boat shoes.
Just to prove how versatile these shoes really are we’ll tackle the hardest category – the dreaded smart-casual. Often it’s easy to lean one way and go too casual or smart, but the detailed and classic look of boat shoes means it’s easy to bridge that small gap.
Pair them with slim fit chinos with a plain T-shirt, or try smart jeans with a button up shirt. Either of these styles is going to work with the boat shoes, so as long as you’re matching something casual with something smart then the boat shoes will help with the balance.
It’s easy to wear boat shoes with a smart suit as long as you follow the golden rule and don’t wear them with socks. If you can’t bear this idea then try trainer socks and make sure they can’t be seen. Other than that you can wear your shoes how you want, and with any style of suit. A lighter colour is a good choice though as it’ll fit more with the style of the boat shoes, and the finished outfit will look summery, smart and sophisticated.
