The words 'mid layer' is something that's mentioned from time to time, and it can be hard to work out exactly what is it. You've probably heard of layering; well mid layering is basically just the 2.0 version of it. It's the name you give to the middle layer that's between, for example, your t-shirt and your coat.
There are a few pieces that are ideal for mid layering, and that will help keep you warm as well as add some extra dimension to your outfit.
The Denim Jacket/Shirt
The denim jacket is a good example of a mid layer item that's great for when the weather really starts to bite. You can layer it under a thick coat and over a long sleeved shirt or T-shirt to keep the cold out.
If you want the denim look, but don't want to feel too overloaded, try a denim shirt instead. You can layer this over a plain T-shirt so the look stays simple, and then finish with a light weight jacket or coat over the top.
The gilet - or vest - is the best example of a mid layer item, as it was essentially made to be one. There are so many different colours and designs that you're spoilt for choice, and there's going to be one that fits your style. If the gilet seems too casual and you want to go for a smarter look, try one in a lighter weight material. You won't look so padded and it could actually help add some alternative tones and dimensions to your outfit.
