The North Face

Established in 1966 by two hiking devotees, The North Face started as a small mountaineering retail store in San Fransisco. Soon after, the store moved to the other side of San Francisco Bay, where it gained its reputation for producing high-quality performance and backpacking products and where they began to develop their range of exploration equipment. It wasn't long before outdoor enthusiasts were flocking to get their hands on The North Face, and the brand started to reach out and sponsor treacherous expeditions.

Soon after, The North Face ventured into producing skiwear, to add to their growing range of outdoor clothing and accessories including sleeping bags and tents. The brand evolved and become popular not only amongst mountaineers but also athletes, rock-climbers, trailers, runners, explorers and more.

The North Face was - and still is - admired for its practicality and functionality as well as its classic style and ease of wear. This is where The North Face men's Nuptse jacket comes in.

The History of the Nuptse

The North Face Nuptse jacket is one of the most significant designs the brand ever created, and it's now celebrating its 25th birthday of full success. So, what is the Nuptse? Birthed in 1992, The North Face created a jacket that would suit explorers - a warm, practical jacket that was lightweight and protective. Down was the immediate answer - light to hold, warm to wear and easy to pack. Made with RDS-certified goose down (feathers), the Nupste was constructed with its signature horizontal baffle, perfect for keeping the distribution of the down equal.

So, where did it gets its name? Plain and simple, Nuptse is a mountain that sits two kilometres southwest of Mount Everest. 'Nuptse' is the Tibetan translation from 'West Peak', where the designers of the jacket made camp for 55 days. Whilst at the base of Nuptse, they debated the essentials required from a jacket that would suit the conditions, and the jacket was born.

Then, this men's North Face jacket was a revolution. Now, it's a wardrobe staple for every style-conscious man.

Evolution of the Nuptse

From classic to modern, the Nuptse jacket has evolved through the years to become a streetwear staple. What was once considered the best jacket for exploration, the Nuptse has now created a whole new audience for itself - the fashion youth.

The Nuptse was evolved into black colours of blue, yellow and red, joining the classic black colourway. This was all down to visibility whilst up the mountains. Practicality came first, style came second. These block colours helped to make the jacket the iconic fashion piece that it is today.

The North Face Nuptse 2 jacket now comes in a vest/gilet version, made suitable for the street explorers of the world. In addition to this, and in celebration of 25-years, the 1992 Nuptse jacket now comes in a yellow dome print - a stand out jacket that is a celebration of everything the jacket was and has become and the pinnacle of Nuptse street style. This is also available in The North face Nuptse gilet style. Notable Collaborations

Like all great brands, The North Face is no stranger to a collaboration, and in 2017 alone, the exploration brand has partnered up with a mass of household names to create highly sought after, one-off pieces. These collaborations allow The North Face to extend its fashion audience whilst offering partnering brands its insight and knowledge of technical practical garments.

Some notable collaborations include the Junya Watanabe collab which was released as part of the SS18 catwalk collection in Paris. This collection also featured collaborative pieces with Carhartt WIP. Further down the line, the latest Junya Watanabe FW17 line up features more North Face cross work, also featuring Carhartt and Levi's.

The North Face x Sacai collaboration dropped at the beginning of September 2017. This collection saw technical long coats, T-shirts, hoodie, caps and beanies which were released in Dover Street Market. The North Face x Sacai collab was so popular that it was re-stocked mid-October.

As much as we would love to mention all the other collaborations, we'll focus on perhaps their biggest team-up to date: Supreme x North Face.

The North Face x Supreme

The first Supreme x North Face collaboration was a sell-out. The collab was so good that it did another - and another, and another... Their first team up was in 2007 for Fall/Winter where they re-worked the Summit jackets. For Spring/Summer 2008, the Summit jacket was re-designed with the loud cityscape printed along it. Later that year for Fall/Winter, they were back at it with the Denali zip-up fleece jackets collab, where they released them in bold 90's block colours.

The North Face x Supreme Nuptse

Coming back to the Nuptse, in 2011, Supreme x North Face created their first variation of the iconic jacket: the leopard print, famously worn by Drake in his 'The Motto' music video. Skipping to 2015, the Nuptse was again recreated with a striking rabbit fur pattern, which also dropped as a gilet. 2015 saw the drop of the “By Any Means Necessary” Supreme North Face jacket in stand-out black, red and yellow colourways. This quote came from Malcolm X, an American activist.

Coming into the more recent years, and with the hype around Supreme bigger than ever, we saw the Fall/Winter 2016 collab where the Nuptse jacket was covered in leaves and turned luminous orange. These jackets came alongside matching puffer trousers and The North Face Nuptse boots.

Supreme x North Face's 19th Collaboration

Now, in 2017, we have just seen another Supreme X North Face drop where the Nuptse jacket goes leather. The leather Nuptse came in and yellow/black, red/black and all black colourway, hitting the shelves at whopping £998. Yes, they all sold out.

This drop also saw the release of leather gloves, cross body bags, duffle bags and backpacks. All of these were equally expensive, and as quick a sell-out.

As you have now seen, the Nuptse jacket has an extensive past and a pretty bright future. The jacket, originally created for practicality, has now been developed and evolved to a must-have for every fashion enthusiast - brands are lining up to work with the outdoor clothing giant.

There will no doubt be plenty more collaborations to come for the Nuptse. What better way to celebrate the best the brand has to offer since their many years of establishment?

It's evident that The North Face Nuptse jacket has been the most iconic item it has created. It has also been the most influential when it comes to fashion. It's simple and effective in design and incredibly easy to style. Pair it with joggers to go for a more street vibe, or team it with jeans for a casual look. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled on future collaborations and check out our store to get your hands on a Nuptse ASAP.
