Birkenstock has been creating their iconic shoes since the 1700s, and years of orthopaedic experience and technical innovation have made their footwear some of the most recognisable (and comfiest) around. The Idle Man is pleased to introduce the latest collection from Birkenstock - enjoy!
Birkenstock was founded in Frankfurt, Germany by Johann Adam Birkenstock, and can actually be dated as far back as 1774 - now that's heritage. Fast forward slightly to 1898, and Konrad Birkenstock was holding seminars and lectures to orthopaedic specialists on the importance of well made footwear. This was something that would soon come in handy, with Birkenstock's expertise playing a massive part in manufacturing footwear for injured soldiers.
With new technology came new innovation, and Birkenstock were the first to develop a electro-mechanic moulding machine, which uses a single adjustable mould to produce all sizes and widths in correct proportions. And if you've ever put your feet in a pair, you'll know that they are the comfiest things in the world. Today Birkenstock boasts a hugely eco-friendly production, and uses only high-grade materials to create shoes that will last you literally years.
Let's face it, you've probably heard mixed things about men's ability to wear sandals. Yes, there are some definite no-no's when it comes to wearing them (just forget trying to wear socks with them), but there are serious sartorial style points up for grabs if you can pull them off.
Go for a classic dark pair with the contrasting cork sole to ease your way into wearing Birkenstocks if you're unsure - any eye-catching colourways will draw attention, which isn't what you want if you're not experienced in the art of sandal-wearing. Wear with a simple pair of jeans, and make sure you turn them up to avoid 'dad-on-the-beach' territory.
It is almost summer after all, so what better time to invest in a pair of Birkenstock shoes. While jeans can be troublesome when wearing with sandals, a pair of shorts are a lot easier to get right. Opt for a pair of chino shorts in the same tone as your Birkenstock's to subtly tie them in - it'll create a more put-together outfit, rather than looking like you've thrown them on to go down the shop.
If you're feeling a little more adventurous, Birkenstock have created their classic Arizona sandal with a two-tone contrasting pop of colour, which will add interest to any summer casual look. Just stick to tonal colourways throughout your look to keep it fresh and contemporary. Not a hint of 'old man' around here.
On That Note
When it comes to sandals, Birkenstock are the go-to. Whether you're a fan of sandals or not, there's no denying that the brand is probably the most recognisable - and it's no surprise seeing as they've been around for literally centuries. Whether you go for classic tones or mix it up with an unexpected pop of colour, you're guaranteed to get the comfiest footwear around and in the most durable of fabrics. You'll be wearing them for years to come, and look great whilst doing it.
