Back in the days of your day and grandad wearing a pair or casual shoes or trainers with a formal suit would of been a style sin that no-one would of committed. However, over the past few seasons we have been seeing trainers been worn with a suit, both on the street and on the catwalks around the world.
Here at Idle HQ many of us are fans of wearing a pair of nice, casual trainers with some formal trousers and a shirt. They breath a casual air into, what could of been, a more formal look. But sometimes comfort and style come hand-in-hand and here at Idle HQ we see ourselves wearing trainers with a suit for a long tim to come, and we couldn't be happier.
If you're thinking of tackling this trend anytime soon then it's important to know what type of trainers you'll be getting yourself involved with. You only have to trawl through various street style blogs to see that men are wearing pretty much any trainers possible with a suit. Of course, this throws up the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to trainers, so nailing down a style is crucial.
One of the best trainer styles to team with your suit will probably be the low top trainer. These allow you to wear a pair of suit trousers that show off a little bit (worn without socks, or invisible ones if you have them) of ankle at the same time. This creates a nice shape to your outfit an showing off the right amount of skin, a personal favourite way of wearing them.
You'll want to go for neutral colours when picking out a pair of trainers. Try wearing this pair of Vans in black and white (best of both worlds). Their casual silhouette and comfortable wear will make wearing them with a suit an easy and enjoyable experience.
If you want something a little more modern however, then why no give this pair of grey Native Shoes trainers a whirl. The breathable and comfortable upper gives you a fresh and easy wear whilst the silhouette offers a sleek and modern take on the trainer - a perfect option to team with a black or navy suit this season.
High top trainers probably won't be the first type of trainer you think of when teaming them with a suit, but hear us out. High tops will, obviously, sit higher on your leg than a pair of low trainers will, so you'll need to invest in a pair of trousers that sit a little bit higher on your leg, or, roll them up to properly show off your trainers.
For a classic shoe that's versatile and extremely easy to wear, then go for a pair of Chuck Taylor Converse in Black. These off a slimmer silhouette to your foot so you'll probably want to balance it out with a wider legged trouser.
Sometimes adding a bit of colour to your everyday look can work, you just have to balance it out. Try wearing this pair of navy and yellow high top Vans for a colourful and bang on trend option. Your best bet with the suit is to go for a navy option to tie in with the navy on the shoes. Teamed with a plain white tee underneath a navy suit jacket will give you a smart and stylish look for both the office and during the day.
Plimsolls are a comfortable and easy approach to wearing a pair of trainers with your suit. The slim line silhouette of the trainer gives a less bulky look to your outfit. Opt for classic colours when wearing a pair of plimsolls, i.e. white, black or navy to create a versatile look this season.
For simple ease of wear then why not try wearing these Vans classic slip on shoes. Their neutral colour and comfort will add that casual edge to your suiting that you're probably after. They would work perfectly with a black suit with a simple white button down shirt.
For a plimsoll that has all the comfort and style that you could possibly ask for in a shoe then why not give this navy Superga pair a go. These are the ultimate in casual footwear and would work well with an all navy look this season.
It's all well and good talking about trainers until the cows come home but we need to start thinking about what we're going to wear with them. The suit will probably be the most invested piece of clothing you'l have in your wardrobe arsenal, so, it's important that you buy the right one. When you're looking for a suit the fit is the most essential part, if a suit doens't fit right then the whole look is ruined.
You can't go wrong with a classic black suit. It's timelessness and ease of wear will make it the perfect accompaniment to most trainer colours you can throw at it. This black suit jacket and trousers from The Idle Man is a spot on option for teaming with a multitude of different styles and colours of trainers. For a classic look then why not team it with a pair of classic white low top trainers to a sleek and understated outfit that is office and day appropriate at the same time.
