How To Style The Cuban Collar Shirt

Loose fitting, boxy and bold, the Cuban collar shirt, also known as a "revere collar" or "camp collar" shirt, has earned it's title as one of the most versatile pieces in our wardrobes.

The Cuban collar shirt can be dated as far back as the 18th century, finding it's peak in 1950's America when everyone from the suburban dad (think retro bowling shirts worn by Charlie Sheen in Two and a Half Men) to the king himself, Elvis Presley, was wearing them. 90's references look to cool-cat Christopher Walken in Tarantino's True Romance and fair Verona's finest; The Montague's, in Baz Luhrmann's 90's cult-classic, Romeo & Juliet. And while we have no immediate plans to don a gun holster or die for our lovers, we do have plans to look as cool hell with the wind billowing through our open cuban collar shirts, à la Leo as we stride to our local beer garden, come summer.

Boasting short sleeves and an open, notch lapel-like collar, Cuban collar shirts are best worn oversized in lightweight fabrics. The smart-casual appeal makes it an instant wardrobe staple. Pair yours with smart trousers or chinos for a relaxed yet tailored look or wear it open, layered with a white tee and your go-to denim jeans whilst we wait for the weather to heat up. This season's must-have item comes in many variations ranging from wildly tropical prints to subdued tonal hues. We've collated our Idle Man favourites below.
