With the end of summer comes the beginning of a new school or university year. This is a perfect excuse to grab yourself a brand new bag to carry all of your daily essentials. Of course, there's more to it than the classic backpack, with a whole variety of bags for you to choose from, you can be easily thwarted into buying something that's totally impractical and completely not you.
I think we can all remember starting secondary school with your uniform that was at least two sizes too big, a pair of rigid smart shoes that your mother bought in the hopes that they'll last as you grow into them, and of course, the backpack that was almost as big as you were. Filled to the brim with books you had no idea about and usually covered in self-made graffiti you always made your backpack your own, and now you're a little bit older you can do just that again.
Handy, practical and oh so stylish the backpack has made a real revival over the past few years, with different brands and designers bringing out a range of backpacks that you can be proud of showing off in the lecture room or office.
The days of the classic superman 'S' and 'Bob Smith woz ere 2k8' being written across your backpack are sadly gone, so it's time your backpack grew up just as much as you surely must have. Try going for something sleek and more professional looking, something that carries the day's essentials in style.
The Tote Bag
The tote bag for men is a bit of a new phenomenon with many men embracing this new form of carrying everything they hold dear. Get the idea of your mum's bag for life out of your head and start thinking of something more sleek and professional and not the canvas bag with 'I Love Shopping' written across it in a questionable font.
What you wan to look for in a tote is something that you can easily carry around your laptop it with room to spare. Too often you'll find a tote that is more narrow and tall than it is wide, so it's neither use nor ornament when it comes to carrying anything around in it.
Totes are one of the easiest bags to carry, especially if you've got one with handles that you can sling over your shoulder when you're on the go. Perfect for fitting everything in, including the kitchen sink, for those days when you simply need to carry everything with you.
The briefcase is something that many of us tend to avoid when it comes to bags, especially with the reference from The Inbetweeners sticking in our minds constantly. However, you don't have to go for the rigid wooden based briefcase that you can see all around the banking areas, you can go for something more modern and youthful instead.
Like most of us, when we're on our way to work, or even during our working day, we're a little rushed off of our feet, so it's good to have a briefcase that will allow you to access it with ease whilst being practical and stylish. Go for a briefcase with a canvas outer, as this will take the worry away from your mind about damaging or marking it in any way. Also, if you can, try and find one that has an added shoulder strap for those days when you cant be bothered to hand hold it.
Perfect for taking into the office or workplace as a more grown-up and stylish bag over a backpack or tote. Perfect for carrying your laptop and daily essentials in style, the briefcase has it all, so embrace it and go for a briefcase this season!
The Duffle Bag
If you want a bag that you can literally carry everything and anything in, then I'd suggest going for a duffle bag. Perfect for those avid after-work gym goers who want to carry everything they need for the day plus their working out gear for afters.
If, like me, you carry your laptop everywhere you go then the duffle bag will right up your street. With room to spare you can put in all of your daily essentials (I carry things I don't even need, just because I can), and perfect for those weekends away with your mates.
Again, you don't want to invest in something that you;re too afraid of using for fear of damaging or breaking it, so go for a hard-wearing, durable material like a canvas. Also, you'll want to look for a duffle bag that has an added shoulder strap for when you pack it too much and it gets too heavy to hold in your hand.
Your Quick Guide to School or Work Bags
- Stick to classic shapes and styles such as the backpack or briefcase if you're not feeling adventurous.
- If you're not into bright colours, then go for something classic like black, brown or grey.
- Go for the more modern tote bag if you're after something a little bit different. Just make sure you've got enough room in the handles to sling it over your shoulder if necessary.
- Keep it simple, keep it classic and keep it stylish.
On That Note
The wide variety of bags you can choose from is vast. Depending on your style and mood you can mix it up, or, go for something that's a little out of your comfort zone. What you have to keep in mind is your own personal style, what you need it for and how often you're going to be using it, as you don't want to waste your time and money on something you're never going to use or wear.
Whether you go for the classic backpack or go for something more modern like a tote bag, just remember to keep it stylish, and avoid anything you'll be too scared to wear.
