We chat to hundreds of artistic men and women in our Best Of The Web series, interviewing bloggers, designers, singers and activists, gaining their tips on everything from music to fashion. This week we're with photographer and music producer Jason Zerbin.
With his artistic vision and talent it was hard for Jason to stick to just one creative outlet, so he settled on a few. As a music producer and front man for indie band Zerbin he's had his tracks make their way to the Top 40, as well as played in various films and TV shows, and his fan base has grown rapidly over the years. Alongside his music he's a talented photographer and his Instagram showcases his vivid, scenic shots. We caught up with this multi-talented artist to hear what he's been up to, and his views on men's fashion and style.
Can you tell us a little bit about what you do and when you got into it?
I’m an artist and creative entrepreneur with my hands in a number of things. I’ve been writing and producing music for the last 10 years and had the privilege of my creations making their way into the Top 40 as well as onto a bunch of films and televisions spots. I started more seriously diving into photography in the last couple years, with a bend to outdoor/adventure stuff. Most recently I’ve been getting into fashion/lifestyle photography as well as B&W nudes. In my free time I’m starting a tech company with a friend.
How’s 2015 been for you? Any major highlights?
2015 was a crazy year with a lot of change in my personal life and career. I went through a bit of a spiritual deconstruction, released a record, moved three times, and started a Masters degree. The major highlights have been a handful of random moments listening back to what we created in the studio or looking at some of the unbelievable scenes that I had the privilege of photographing.
What song have you got on repeat at the moment?
Sufjan Steven’s latest record Carrie & Lowell is life for me right now. Although the music I create tends to be pretty anthemic, I gravitate to simpler more serene stuff.
What fashion advice do you have for a man?
I feel like it’s typical to say “be confident blah bah” but I would say be honest, take advice, and focus on cultivating personal style. People see through bullshit and I think this can come out in what we choose to wear. Try out styles, take some risks, and figure out what works for you.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
Haha to this I would say be confident and take more risks. I think we all deal with figuring out who we are and the value of what we have to bring into the world and that can be a bit of a go. I’d say trust your instincts, don't doubt yourself so much, and release more music.
1 tip to grow your Instagram account
Figure out your take on the world and embrace that. People feel a lot of pressure to fit in with whatever is the current editing/content trend but again just do your thing. Obviously do it well but pay attention to what you enjoy and how people respond to the things you post. If you just want followers you can play the hashtag, like bomb, follow for follow game but thats never been my jam.
What’s the one thing you never want to see a guy wearing?
His foot in his mouth- that’s always a bit of a painful thing to see. Or anything that has to do with Donal Trump.
Who’s the most stylish man on the planet for you right now?
My friend Andrew Joseph is a fashion designer in NYC and started a company called Prospekt Supply. They make some rad windbreakers and other outerwear basics. The reason he’s my pick is cause the dude has no problem wearing basketball shorts and a big old t-shirt one moment then switching into high-fashion mode the next. Versatilely is a style key.
Any major plans for 2016?
I’m starting a bunch of photo and music projects as well as founding a company with a friend so there is much on the go.
