When it comes to wearing floral prints, it can be quite an art to be able to pull off such a feat. For example, you can look rather suave yet fun, or you can end up looking like you're experiencing some form of life crisis on the way to Hawaii. Here's our quick tutorial on why floral prints are an important asset in men's fashion and why you shouldn't write them off just yet.
The floral print has been around for years. Often mistaken these days as a tool to any middle-aged holiday-maker's suitcase, there are various ways you can successfully wear floral print in a sophisticated and fashionable way whilst challenging these old-fashioned conventions. As they say, it takes a real man to wear pink - and wearing floral is no exception to this rule.
If you're a smart dresser who loves his suits, then try dabbling with the floral tie. Ties are often a great way for any successful businessman to show his personality, without sacrificing his style.
As long as the colours in the tie compliment the colours of your shirt and the rest of the tie, you're set to go. For example, a blue suit with a lavender shirt and a deep blue and purple floral tie, will go really well for those creative meetings or functions. You can't really go wrong with a floral tie at a wedding either just make sure you know the time and place to debut your floral tie style.
If you want to make a bold statement, whilst still being fairly easy on the eye, a men's floral Blazer paired with jeans or trousers and a plain white shirt will do the trick. If you're going for a floral blazer, keep in mind what type of floral you'll be going for. You don't want to choose something too in your face but you also don't want to wear a floral blazer that skips the whole floral trend entirely.
Try a dark purple or blue men's floral jacket with a t shirt underneath that complements some of the floral colours. For example, if you have a blazer with elements of white roses in it, then a plain white t shirt underneath will tone down the floral pattern, as well as compliment it. Paired with a basic pair of jeans and shoes, you're good to go.
The Floral Shirt
A flowery shirt can either look really stylish and on point or you could end up looking like a tourist at the beach. So, to channel your inner tourist vibe there are two ways to pull off a floral shirt. The first way is to choose a shirt that is fairly loose fitting around the body and keep the colours to a minimum. Button this shirt up and wear with black jeans or trousers so you don't deteriorate away from the shirt as the main outfit feature. Floral shirts for men are probably the easiest floral element to style, along with men's floral tees which can be styled the same way. A floral print T-shirt for men can be worn with jeans or trousers, we have found that tans or beige's work best if you really want to showcase a top summer trend.
The second way to nail a floral shirt is to wear it open with a plain white tee underneath. This allows you to go for brighter and bolder prints as the loudness is neutralised by the T-shirt seen under the floral shirt. This is the perfect shirt to wear in the summer, to a festival or on holiday. It is an easy way to support the floral trend and is an easy look to put together.
Just remember that if you're wearing any bold print, whether it be floral's or any other prints, you need to make sure you can tone it down with a basic pair of jeans or trousers and a plain tee.
The Floral Print Trousers
How to wear printed trousers can be a tricky business. You don't want to give off a fancy-dress vibe with some garish patterns. They need to be understated, with just a subtle hint of expression, which can speak volumes about your personality. Try looking for some relaxed jeans with some floral patterns in them for a low level first try, if you're unsure. Alternatively, dark trousers with a bright floral print can go well with a dark top to avoid clashing, whilst holding your fashion integrity.
When wearing floral trousers, be aware of where you're wearing them to. Floral trousers and a corporate office environment do NOT go well. If you're on a night out to the pub with friends, or on a casual day out in London, then floral trousers can be perfect. They're usually made with a very comfortable material, which again means a huge fashion statement with minimal hassle.
Shorts with a floral print are an ideal summer alternative to wearing floral trousers (and are probably a lot easier to pull off). Again if you can tone the print down with a casual shirt or tee on the top, you're avoiding the problematic Hawaiian shorts laughter. A lot of denim shorts have a pale floral print on them which can go really nicely with a shirt on a warm summers day, without being too bold. Men's floral shorts should come up just above the knee as any longer may give off that touristy vibe again. Keep other elements of your outfit simple so the shorts are the main event.
The Floral Suit
The floral suit is the boldest of bold statements a guy can make. Floral suits are very fashion forward so if you're confident enough to rock one of these, there's no stopping you now. Make sure the print isn't too much and you wear it will minimal accessories. A plain white shirt and a pair of brogues will do just the trick, anything else and you may look like an un-weeded flower bed. To make the suit even more summery, a short suit is very ideal, just make sure your choice of shoes don't show off too much sock so choose wisely.
If you're not quite keen on wearing a large floral item of clothing, such as trousers or a blazer, then don't shy away from the print altogether. Have a look at caps, socks, and even braces or shoes for inspiration. These can show off your personality just as well as any other item of clothing, without giving too much away. Often, you can find great floral prints on canvas shoes like Vans, Converse or even brogues.
More Tips and Tricks with Floral Prints
If you're looking at trying out floral, great! Just remember to be aware of a few things beforehand:
Floral isn't just for Summer. The print used to be associated with Summer beaches and hot days in the sun. However these days, designers have incorporated floral patterns to suit every season. Avoid bright and summery looks for the Autumn and Winter months - go for navy blues, greys, dark browns and purples. This can be a great way of using the floral print in a smart way.
Limit your floral prints. To be able to pull off this style, you need to limit the use of it in any outfit. Have only one item of clothing featuring this pattern (or two if you're wearing a matching suit), and it'll stand out nicely whilst complimenting the rest of your outfit. This way, you'll also avoid clashing and looking somewhat clown-like.
If you're worried about floral prints being too feminine, then you can toughen up the print with some masculine accessories and dark jeans or a blazer. Not all floral prints are bright. You can get a grey shirt with a dark grey floral on it, which can be nice and subtle for your needs.
Wearing Floral Print
It's important that you feel confident with what you're wearing.
The floral print should be the main part of your outfit so style with minimal accessories.
Don't always shy away from brighter colours, always pair them with a complimenting colour.
Floral prints aren't just for summer, darker prints work well in the winter.
