Cocktails & Meatballs: The Unlikely Combo At 31K

Cocktails & Meatballs: The Unlikely Combo At 31K

After a busy day at work there's nowhere I'd rather go than the brand new bar/restaurant 31K down off the beaten track in Hockley, Nottingham to enjoy their delicious and unique menu.

The old and dormant building once home to TS Kaye and Sons Toolmakers and Merchandise, has been given a new lease of life by the group of friends who have opened up the brand new cocktail bar and restaurant, 31K. The building still holds it's a character with its stain glass windows showing the street number 31 and what it was once known as, Kayes. Keeping its heritage the new owners thought it would be a nice touch to call the bar, 31K.

We arrived on a mild Thursday evening for an early doors meal and drinks. The scene was perfect for a few drinks, placed slightly further down the street from the other bars and restaurants it almost stands alone, except for the Pizza Express that sits opposite. Making it the perfect start to any evening, you can grab a bite to eat from their unique selection of meatballs/not-meat balls whilst sipping on a tantalizing cocktail before heading further up towards Hockley into the hustle and bustle of more bars.

After taking our seats we scanned over the menu, "choose your ball, sauce, carb and greens - then we’ll do the rest" it read at the top. You can choose one of four options for each, they offer a very fair and balanced list catering for vegetarians and vegans. For my own meal, I decided to go with, the chicken ball, arrabbiata sauce, chips and slaw, whilst my friend 'C' chose the not-meat ball which was 100% plant-based with arrabbiata, chips and edamame bean medley. To go with our food I tried their berry mojito and 'C' tried their varied selection of beers. To confirm, the drinks were refreshing and delightful.

Our food arrived in good time and steaming hot. The unusual meal accompanied by a cocktail actually came together as any guilty pleasure should. Creating a mixture of flavours and textures in each bite we were struggling to slow down and make the most of each mouthful. The meatball (or not-meat ball in 'C's' case) worked well with whatever you pick off the menu, in my case having the slaw was the icing on top of the meal as it could be an overly stoggy meal without something refreshing on the side to mix up the flavours even more.

After finishing what was an impressive portion we stayed for one more drink to soak up the atmosphere before heading out to continue our night. Inside the quirky restaurant itself, it seemed quite small but held an intimate feeling. The wooden bar was, in fact, handbuilt by the group of friends, they also built a mezzanine level making use of the high ceilings and create more space which looks out over the bar.
