For this weeks Idle Man recommends edition, we look into Madrid based photographer Ben Roberts. In the midst of his sensational 'Occupied Spaces' and 'Higher Lands' projects, Roberts' is known for his extensive photography portfolio which boasts clients such as HSBC, UEFA and the weekend magazines of The Guardian and The Financial Times. We were pleasantly surprised to find his archive of Notting Hill Carnival imagery ahead of next weekends events.
If you aren't a Londoner, you might not be aware that the notorious street festival Notting Hill Carnival, which has grown to be the largest of its kind in Europe, is taking place this bank holiday weekend (Sunday August 24 and Monday August 25). In Roberts' 2008 version of events, he depicted both the joy and tension that occurs in the west London neighbourhood every year, in all its reality. Amongst the 1 million visitors, he was able to capture carnival locals, entertainers and the West Indian community atmosphere all behind his lens. Which is not surprising, as Roberts had spent two days engrossed in the carnival from start to finish.
So if you haven't been before but would like something to do next weekend, then stick around to check out some examples from Robert's 'Carnival' portfolio and be convinced. We'll see you there?
