Dimensions Festival 2016 Review

Renowned for eclectic bookings from across the globe, Dimensions Festival opened its 5th year with the likes of Massive Attack, Moodyman, Hiatus Kayote, Larry Heard, Gene Hunt, Shanti Celeste, Ben Klock and Motor City Drum Ensemble.

Our first introduction to Fort Punta Christo, Croatia was the the cobblestone beach which stretches across north of the peninsula. Exhausted after an 8 hour journey from London via Venice we relaxed on the coastline watching the evening sunset. Locals and fellow festival goers are chatty and you immediately you get the sense of excitement. Similar to the calm before storm if that storm consisted of some of the best and emerging talents in house, soul and techno. One aspect that immediately becomes apparent is how far the reach of the scene goes. Hearing diverse mix of languages as you travel through the site - bumping into ravers from Australia, Dubai, France and Germany. Throughout the week we got a genuine feeling of togetherness. Braving the loose cobblestones that make up paths between stages, the site is a decent size which allows music heads to traverse through the fort in around 30mins.

A Dimensions essential is to jump on the array of day/night time boat parties. Hessle Audio fronted by Ben UFO, Pearson Sound, Pangea and Hodge played a great mix of Funk, Dub and a sprinkle of UK Funky as we roamed the coastline ending on Mala’s Alicia. Elgo Records the following day brought more vibes including a great set from Sassy J who played Normalizo followed by K15 dropping his edit of Gypsy Woman.

Highlights of the festival included a killer live set from Larry Heard at The Clearing stage. Larry and Mr White floated between edits of Can You Feel It and Sun Can’t Compare to a super engaged, albeit emotional crowd. Shanti Celeste, Gene Hunt and DJ Stingray shutdown The Moat in equal measures. Gene’s edit of Iron Lion Zion perfectly summed up his high energy set. Resident Advisor took over The Void stage with big names from the detroit house and techno sectors.  Soichi Tedera gave us an animated selection of his own productions while working the crowd for Hunee who was up next.

Dimensions is an essential addition to anyone's music calendar for it's atmosphere. Croatia equally provides a perfect escape from the constrictive red tape you find at most UK festivals. Ultimately our five days in Croatia consisted of daytime beach lounging, watching the sunset to seeing the best acts underground music has to offer till the sun rose again.
