Heading to a UK festival in mid-january might sound like the worst idea ever, but that’s exactly what The Idle Man team did attending Bugged Out Weekender (BoW). Having only heard good things about the festival (now in its fifth year), we were keen to finally experience what partying in Butlins had in store for us. The 2016 roster included Armand Van Helden, Groove Armada, Heidi, Kerri Chandler, B.Traits, Dusky, Lil Silva, Barely Legal, Klose One, Matt Jam Lamont, Jackmaster, Novelist, Mumdance and Julio Bashmore.
From an outsider perspective, you might be a bit sceptical venturing to Butlin's flagship site for a festival, but in practice it was a fresh way to experience the line up. We had the chance to see Paranoid London play in an arcade, DJ EZ at centre stage then end the night with Joy Orbison & Gerd Jansen shelling down the Reds basement stage. All of which takes place a few minutes away from your Hotel or chalet.
What I love about BoW organisers is that there were lots of attention to detail. From Artwork voicing service announcements in our hotel, the guy handing out Bloody Mary's each morning, DJ competitions and secret sets that you had to be in the right time and place to see. It’s a really spontaneous festival with good people, music and experiences at the heart of it all. Highlights for us were the Artwork after parties on each night for those with the stamina and conviction to dance till 8am.
