It's been a huge year for you, tell us what you've been up to so far.
It's been busy! I’ve been in the studio loads, working on new music, back and forth to LA and I’ve just recently signed a new deal with Motown Records out in the States. I’ve just dropped my new track ‘Hop On’ featuring Stefflon Don,I’ve recorded a track called 'Fvxk With You' with Rich Homie Quan which is my next single and I’ve had a load of live shows too.
For anyone who's not up on Angel yet, how would you describe your sound.
I’d describe my music as very authentic. I’d say authentic urban and also very musical.
You grew up in a pretty creative household, what sort of music would you hear as a kid?
I would mainly hear genres like revival, reggae and a bit of soul here and there. A lot of that came about from my dad, with him being a musician. So there was always loads of different instruments being played in the house and loads of different artists coming through so it was something you couldn’t get away from and you couldn’t help but build up a passion for music.
Who are your inspirations, which 1 artist has affected you the most? (dead or alive)
My first inspiration has got to be God, number two is my dad and the other inspirations are musicians like Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Brandy, Prince, Tupac, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. The one artist who has affected me the most has got to be Michael Jackson. As a kid he had me so locked and thinking ‘woah that’s nuts!’ with the stuff he put out. He’s the one person that gives you so much to think about as an artist.
What 3 items of clothing could you not live without?
I couldn’t live without my trainers, boxers and my hats.
We're all over 'Hop On', tell us about the creative process behind the single?
I used to play the Keith Sweat and Kut Klose song ‘Get Up On It’ as a kid and for some reason it’s still at the forefront of my mind at this stage in my life. It'll be in my mind forever now, so as this whole 90s thing has come back, even though I’ve always been into it the whole sound is now back on the airwaves. With it being one of my favourite tunes, I thought I’m going to flip it and I just got this organic vibe. So I sped it up and I thought how can I really flip it? So I double timed it at first and then thought I need a dope rap at the end of the track so I took it straight to Stefflon Don. I hit her up and she came down to the studio, started spitting some fire in the booth and the rest is history!
What's coming up for the rest of 2016?
There's some more amazing singles to look forward to. The next one being 'Fvxk With You' - the single featuring Rich Homie Quan, that'll be out soon. There’s more shows and more music for the rest of the year.
Finally, we need to know, what 3 tracks are you listening to the most right now?
Everyday recently I’ve been listening to ‘Cut It’ by O.T. Genesis. I’m also loving the Rihanna track ‘Sex With Me’ & Meek Mill ‘All The Way Up’ remix.
