A Guided Tour of Gothenburg with NIBC

NIBC's initial idea was to talk about Berlin, where he's been based for the past seven years. Despite his new residency in the German capital, NIBC still hasn't managed to cut off all ties with his hometown Gothenburg, and we thought it could be a more interesting option to take a look at the Swedish West Coast. If you're also curious about his favourite Berlin spots you can check out NIBC's online guide.

The last handful of years have witnessed NIBC going from strength to strength as a producer, and his recent smash house hit 'You Let Me Go', was snapped up by Ministry of Sound. His success has lead to him becoming head of Trunkfunk Records, with his dual focus now on developing his underground house sound and record label, there are big things to come from NIBC.

Where's your favourite place to eat?

It’s an excellent vegetarian restaurant, accompanied by a great selection of eco-friendly organic beer and wine. The music curated by Ideal Recordings label boss Joachim Nordwall ensures there are lot of great DJ's on the weekends. Definitely worth a visit!

Where do you go to clear your head?

If you’re an old German tourist, your mission is probably to get a glimpse of an 'Elk', and if you’re a kid growing up in Gothenburg, your mum will probably take you here at least once to see the seals being fed. Since 2007, there has been another reason to visit the lovely central park of Gothenburg, for one weekend in August the city festival ’Way Out West’ takes place at Slottskogen. This year, FKA Twigs, Todd Terje, Caribou, Tyler the Creator will be headlining the festival.

Where do you go to grab some inspiration?

Röda sten.

Röda Sten used to feel a bit remote with the massive bridge and leftover cranes from the old docks. The only times I would come here would to play at an illegal party or hang out at the infamous Ghettoplayan beach. The name Röda Sten comes from a stone painted red underneath the bridge.

These days, Röda Sten is less industrial and more integrated in the city. There is an excellent gallery for contemporary art inside the old graffitti building, and there is a lovely restaurant with a beautiful seaside view.

Favourite spot with a livelier atmosphere?

Café Magasinet.

The first streets on the west side of Järntorget and Linnegatan are called Långgatorna, they have always had a nice vibe with loads of small bars and galleries. One of my new favourite hangout spots is Café Magasinet, perfect for a quick beer and grabbing a quick bite to eat.

Where's the best place for a first date?

Sweden's biggest amusement park is located right in the middle of the city, I heard the new roller coaster Helix is one of the best! It’s famous for it's Christmas market that’s lighten up by five million Christmas candles and 900 christmas trees. I still prefer the rides in the summer though.

Where's your favourite place to party?

Even though Yaki-Da is just around the corner from all the mainstream madness at Avenyn, they have managed to keep their integrity pretty well over the years. They always seem to have a high level of artists coming through. The venue has an outdoor terrace in the summer, with four floors playing different variations of music. There is also a specialised absinth bar, which is kind of unique for Gothenburg.

Over the last four years, we’ve hosted a monthly Trunkfunk party at Yaki-Da, with guests like John Talabot, Jimmy Edgar and Kim Ann Foxman. This summer, we’ve managed to get local legendary ice cream manufacturer Lejonet & Björnen to sponsor our summer themed ten hours dance marathon Glassterrass.
