Ensure you have the correct glass and that it is of the right temperature. Usually chilled works best. Take into consideration the weight of the glass as a heavy glass can make a delicate drink taste thin.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to create a fantastic cocktail. In a cocktail where the base spirit is prominent i.e. the Martini or Manhattan, its necessary to use a good quality spirit.

Dependent on the size and quality of the ice you’re using you will have to adjust the time shaking/stirring a cocktail. Large ice would need more time due to less surface area.

Try to be as exact as possible when adding ingredients. If unsure then add less to begin with. You can always add later but you can’t take away.

Drinks are made a certain way for a reason. Use the correct method for the cocktail in hand. Cocktails using juices, dairy or egg are usually shaken because shaking aerates them and creates a frothy, pleasing mouthfeel.

Taste test your cocktail to see if ready. Does it need more of any ingredient? Is it too sweet? Is it too sour? Is it diluted enough? Trust your own taste buds but it does take time master this skill.

The garnish should be there for a reason. The reason should be to elevate the drink. They are especially good for adding aroma, mint, thyme, and rosemary. These herbs can lift a drink when adorning a cocktail. Lemon, lime or any citrus can neutralise musky or egg aromas.
