Your eyes often show the first signs of ageing and unfortunately, this can't be helped but there are many ways to keep your skin and eyes looking younger for longer. The eye area has a reduced amount of oil glands, this is why you will nearly never get spots around your eyes, but it is prone to losing more moisture than the rest of the face which is why it's quick to show off your real age. Moisturisers will revitalise your skin and keep it looking fresh so it's worth knowing whats in them and what better way to do that than make it yourself.

Eye Cream Natural Ingredients

If you're really serious about keeping your eyes bright and dewy you should know what you're putting on them and for many shop bought creams there are a lot of extra ingredients added in to bulk them up. Vitamins that are strong antioxidants will naturally slow the rate of ageing so it is worth knowing what ones are the best ones.

  • Vitamin A is an antioxidant that can help skin and mucous membranes repel bacteria and viruses effectively. The lack of vitamin A will lead to lack of moisture and drying of the skin which will promote ageing. Vitamin A produces more collagen which strengthens skin and improves its elasticity.
  • Vitamin C is another effective producer of collagen this, alongside its antioxidant properties can help damaged skin. It decreases cell damage and aids the healing process so it can contribute to the reduction of dryness, redness and wrinkles.
  • Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant which can help premature ageing and promote healing. The vitamin speeds up cell regeneration which produces this anti ageing benefit along with its ability to retain your natural moisture content and nourish the cells and alleviate fatigue.
  • Vitamin K is more limited on it's use for the skin but still has beneficial blood clotting and healing properties. The vitamin can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles due to without it, calcium can build up and begin to harden the elastin fibres causing fine lines on the skin.

Now you know what vitamins are best for your eye area there are some home ingredients that you're sure to have around the house somewhere which can be included in your natural eye cream recipes. Below are some of the top ingredients that are used in over the counter eye serums.

  • Coconut Oil - The hype around coconut oil for your skin is true and it can contribute to anti-aging as it contains vitamin E and has antioxidant properties.
  • Green Tea - The tea is antioxidant rich which helps protect your skin from environmental stresses while also having evidence surrounding it that claims it can tighten and firm the surface of the skin due to the caffeine.
  • Cucumber - Probably one of the most obvious and stereotypical household buys that will actually benefit your skin. Cucumber can act as a cooling agent and have natural lightening properties.
  • Frankincense essential oil - This astringent means it can help protect skin cells which ultimately helps to reduce wrinkles around the eyes.
  • Lavender essential oil - This is a very soothing, anti-inflammatory oil that can help brighten and improve the elasticity of your skin. This is a popular oil when it comes to anti-ageing creams and gels.

DIY Eye Cream

Natural Anti-ageing Eye Cream

Creating your own anti ageing eye cream can be as easy or difficult as you make it. There are some simple recipes and some more complicated recipes but they all work wonders and you'll soon find which one works for you. With all the ingredients available to be bought over the counter, these homemade eye creams will revitalise your eyes.

  • Coconut oil and Vitamin E capsules - heat up the coconut oil so its in liquid form and mix with the liquid from inside the vitamin E capsules by poking holes in them. Refrigerate until the mixture is a solid again  and this can be used around the eyes as an effective coconut oil eye cream.
  • Almond oil (40ml), calendula oil (20ml), beeswax (20g), dried calendula flowers (handful), frankincense essential oil (2ml), lemon essential oil (1ml) - This may have more ingredients but it will leave your skin looking and feeling newer for longer. Pour boiling water over the calendula flowers, strain and leave to cool. Melt the beeswax and add in the calendula oil, sweet almond oil and drained calendula flowers while still on the heat. Remove the mixture from the heat and add in frankincense and lemon essential oil while mixing and stir until the mixture has fully cooled. Keep in an air tight jar and use daily.
  • Almond oil (40ml), coconut oil (30ml), beeswax (30ml), vitamin E oil (8ml), shea butter (15ml) - Put all the ingredients into a bowl and place over a saucepan of boiling water. Stir once the mixture has melted, making sure all the ingredients has combined and leave to cool.
  • Vitamin C powder (1/2 tsp), distilled water (1 tsp), glycerine (2 tbs) - Dissolve the vitamin C powder in the distilled water and glycerine and store in the fridge for up to two weeks.

One top tip to remember is that these natural eye cream recipes will last between two to three weeks as the ingredients can go off. A shop bought preservative can be added which will increase the life of your homemade skin care.

DIY Under Eye Dark Circles Eraser

Dark circles under your eyes can make you look and feel tired. There are many creams out there that work but if you want a homemade recipe, vitamin E oil should be your go to product.

  • Vitamin E oil (1tsb), lavender essential oil (1tsb), arnica essential oil (1tsb), vitamin K oil (1tsb) - Mix the ingredients together and apply the liquid morning or night. Eye creams with vitamin K are more for under eye dark circles and are much less common to make, however this quick mixture is simple and easy to make and use.

Natural Eye Cream For Puffy Eyes

Waking up in the morning and seeing the puffiness around your eyes can make you want to go back to bed and sleep it off, but for most of us this is when the daily commute starts and sleeping is not an option. If you want to relax, slices of cucumber on your eyes will make you feel refreshed, plus there's a couple of other natural saviours that can reduce all your puffy eye problems.

  • Aloe vera gel (2 tbs), vitamin E oil (1 tsp) - Mix the two together and store in the fridge. The cooling of the aloe vera will make your under eyes feel fresh.
  • Green tea - Boil two green tea bags in water and leave to cool, place these over your eyes for 10-15 minutes. The caffeine in the tea helps with blood flow and the antioxidants contribute to younger looking skin.
