Chris Evans Hair Loss

Chris Evans has rather publically admitted that he has started to go bald. He has amusingly discussed the issue in a number of segments on his BBC Radio 2 show. For a man in his 50s, beginning to lose your hair is something to be expected. Male pattern baldness affects around 50% of men over the age of fifty and is the most common cause of hair loss. However, Chris Evans has also admitted to taking hair loss pills to try and combat this.

Men's Hair Growth Pills

On his radio show, Chris Evans the presenter said that he had been taking hair thickening pills to help his hair grow. However, he suggested that they were working a little bit too well, saying that "I'm taking these pills to help my hair grow but it's not only the hair on my head that's growing". He went on to compare himself the notoriously hairy ex-Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis.

Although the specific type of hair regrowth pill Chris Evans is taking is not known, it's most probably Propecia. Male pattern baldness is most usually caused by an increase in a derivative of testosterone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT prevents vital nutrients and vitamins from reaching the hair follicle and therefore restricts hair growth.

Propecia works by blocking the amount of DHT that reaches the hair follicles and allowing a better blood flow to reach the scalp. Interestingly, although Propecia helps regrow hair on the top of your head it usually has an opposite effect on other areas of your body. This, therefore, doesn't explain Chris Evan's hair growth in other places around his body.

This anomaly could be explained if Evans was also using Minoxidil. Although this product also helps men re-grow hair, it doesn't block DHT. This can, therefore, mean that men will grow hair on other parts of their body as well.

On That Note

It's not very often that you see a man talk so openly about his struggles with hair loss. Chris Evans' open and frank discussion about his own experiences with men's hair loss products can hopefully allow other men get the help they need. If you're looking for safe products then stick with Propecia and Minoxidil. These are the only medically tested medications that are seen to officially increase hair growth.
