Best Shampoo For Straight Hair

Having straight hair is both a blessing and a curse. When it comes to men's straight hair, a lot of guys find that there is no volume in it. We're not talking about an Elvis quiff here, but a little bit of life that prevents it from sticking limp to your head goes a long way.

There are, of course, ways to help this situation, and this help comes in the form of some quality grooming products and shampoos.

What Type of Hair Do I Have?

Before you look for specific shampoos for your hair type, it's a good idea to recognise what exactly your hair type is first. This may sound pretty self-explanatory, and for the most part, it is. However, in this day and age, there are so many grooming products floating about that it's worth being sure. Knowing whether you have straight or curly hair is the first step - we really don't have to tell you how to figure this one out.

Thick Hair

The next stage is differentiating between thick and thin hair. If you have thick hair, you'll often find your hair is more prone to frizz, especially during the hotter summer months when the air is humid. This is simply because there is so much hair that it's hotter on the head, trapping heat and creating more perspiration causing the frizz. It could also because of dehydration - the opposite end of the spectrum. Hair needs a healthy amount of hydration in order to remain smooth, so if you have dry hair you should take action to help it. How can I do this, I hear you ask? Well, shampoos, that's how.

If you have thick, straight hair, you'll need to use a shampoo that states it's for frizz-control. Try to avoid any shampoos that are branded for curly hair as these may contain curling elements aka salts which enhances curls. If on the other hand, you want to try and add some curl to your straight hair, this could be a good way to do it.

Thin Hair

If you don't have thick hair, and you fall into the category of having straight thin hair, fret not - there are ways you can improve the health and appearance. Thin hair can be something that both men and women are born with, however, as we get a little older, both women and men may find their hair starts to thin out. This is usually more distressing in men as they'll know that the balding days are nearing.

One way to help thin straight hair is by keeping your hairstyle short. If you have long hair, you're much more likely (we hope) to brush it which will pull out more hair strands - something that should be avoided. Another tip is to cover it up by using volumising products. The best for this would be volumising powder or hairspray as they are the least invasive on the hair and they won't pull too much.

Finally - and where most men go wrong - don't overwash your hair. There are a fair few 'caffeine' shampoo products on the market which promise to make your hair grow likes it's on drugs. This can lead to the idea that using it every day will be beneficial to the hair thinning. It's not. Overwashing your hair can cause more damage than good, so try to stick to washing it only 2-3 times a week.

How To Add Volume To Straight Hair

Coming back to one of our first points, straight hair often lacks in volume. To fix this, there are a couple of easy solutions. Again, overwashing your hair can lead to it becoming limp and lifeless. Try to aim for two to three washes a week and use volumising shampoos. Unfortunately, straightening shampoos that fix all your straight hair problems don't exist, but a volumising shampoo is your second best option.

These will add the right amount of moisture to your hair and will give it a natural lift. When you've used one of these, give your hair a blow dry. Blow drying may sound like the girliest thing ever, but there's a reason so many women do it. Blow drying hair adds so much volume to the roots, and because the volume is created with heat, it will last much longer. To blow-dry, follow these simple steps:

  1. Wash and condition your hair. Avoid using too much conditioner on your roots as this can make your hair greasier, quicker.
  2. Brush your hair with a comb to get all of the knots out.
  3. Use a hairdryer and dry your hair in the direction you want to style it in. For example, if you want your hair to go backwards, dry it backwards whilst repeatedly combing in the direction to keep all the hair under control.
  4. Use a volumising product like powder or hairspray to set your hair.
