Meet Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie aka Sigma. Known all over the world as the Drum & Bass power duo who emerged on the scene with their first big track, Rudeboy. Born and based in London the chart-toppers dropped new music towards the end of this year with friend and collaborator, Jack Savoretti with ‘You And Me As One’. Since starting out the duo has built up unstoppable momentum releasing bangers after bangers, their latest track followed up their summer remix of Dilemma.
Starting out as two mates who shared an interest in music, the pair worked together in the entertainment industry before creating music together. The moment the two creative minds joined the knew they had to pursue their talents and go big. Luckily for their millions of fans around the world they did, with ten consecutive Radio 1 playlist singles. Over the years they have collaborated with other artists such as Tinie Tempa, Rita Ora, Yxng Bane and Paloma Faith, this time around they have joined up with soulful singer, Jack Savoretti.
After being a fan of each other over the past few years it seemed almost natural that the duo who pair up to create something that’s unique but still true to their Drum & Bass history. The track, which was released mid-October, shows Sigma at their momentous best, as gentle, nuanced synths giving way to a beat-heavy, thunderous chorus, all underpinned by the powerful vocals of Savoretti.
With over 450 million YouTube views in total and 300,000 copies of the debut album ‘Life’ sold Londoners have been climbing up and up with their music somehow seeming to get better each time. With two UK number ones under their belt they aren’t planning on stopping anytime soon, in fact, there could be new music on the horizon. ‘
So without further ado, we at The Idle Man are excited to be sitting down with the duo to hear all about their life, music and what’s to come in the future.
1. How did you guys get into music?
We’ve always been into our music. I guess some of it stems from family, friends and just developed as we got to university and met each other.
2. Where do you find your inspiration to create music?
From various places, it can be from just messing around with different samples, from personal experiences to other musicians.
3. You’re both based in London right now, were you guys born there?
We’re based in and around London yeah! We were born in Surrey / London.
4. When did you guys first start creating music together?
We started creating music together when we were at University in Leeds! Joe was DJing and I (Cam) was putting on live events and working in promotion. We were mates and it kinda just happened from there
5. Tell us about ‘You And Me As One’?
We are big fans of Jack Savoretti and when the conversation came up about us working with him we jumped at the opportunity. He came to the studio and within a few hours we had written the song. He is an amazing singer, songwriter and an all round great guy. It was a pleasure to work with him.
6. How did the collaboration with Jack Savoretti come about?
We have been fans of Jack’s since we heard ‘Catapult.’ We were keen to get in a session with Jack and ‘You And Me As One’ was the result. Jack is a legend and his vocals fitted really well on this record. Sometimes these sessions come to nothing but this really felt natural.
7. What was it like working together on this song? Did you guys click creatively?
Yes we did for sure. I think you can always tell if you don't click. It was really cool to work together on this, lots of jokes flying around but a lot of fun, and the track turned out great.
8. You guys came onto the scene in 2014 with your worldwide hit, ‘Nobody To Love’ how has your lives changed?
We definitely get less sleep nowadays ha. Nah, it's been great. We get to do what we love every day, and that’s to create music. I’m not sure if we were ready for that hit, or ever thought it would happen but its changed our lives for the better. We get to create music, play live and travel the world. What’s not to like?
9. Who else would you love to collaborate with?
We have a long list of people we would love to collaborate with! We definitely want to work with John Newman again, Ella Henderson too!
10. Who would you say are your style inspirations?
Musically, so many. Favourite artists - Birdy, Adele, Drake, Rihanna, Ray Charles.
11. Where have you both enjoyed playing the most?
Royal Albert Hall was an amazing experience! We went ALL out for that show and it was a surreal moment.
12. Is there anywhere that you’ve dreamed of playing?
In the Maldives - and we did! Was quite quiet, but amazing.
13. What song can you not stop listening to right now?
Dave – ‘Location’
The latest song from Sigma, 'Sell My Soul', with the contemporary R&B singer, Maverick Sabre, was recently released. Sabre’s dark, powerful voice rises alongside reggae trumpets, before sharp breakbeats and stomach-churning bass thrust the track into the future. You can listen to the duos the second song recorded with Maverick Sabre.
